The typical quick calc goes something like this:
[(Qty of servers)*(watts load per server)*(3.413 BTU/watt)] / [12,000 BTU
per Ton of cooling] = Tons of cooling
Of course, there are the wildcards thrown in like system component
efficiencies, altitude, maximum degree day temperatures, shading coefficient
for outside equipment, water-cooled versus air-cooled, etc. that usually
require a mechanical engineer to look at the total package. But, from an
electrical-to-heat conversion standpoint, disregarding the above-mentioned
wildcards, the formula will get you into the right ballpark.
A real neat idea --- and one that really helps out the engineers that have
to try and make this work for you --- is to put together a matrix of all the
electronic equipment you plan to have, or do now have, in your data center,
with all of the environmental and electrical engineering data needed to
completely facilitize your center. This matrix then becomes your basis of
design for the engineers to properly and efficiently do their jobs.
As a planning tool, I am seeing and using a beginning factor today of 3.0 KW
per 84" tall server rack. This is independent of the end use of the rack,
whether server farm or collocation space.

What about humidity in the datacenter? How important is control of that
considering the cost? Is it easy or hard? What can happen if humidity isn't

that 1 watt = 3.4120962 BTU/hr. So my questions is how much
cooling do

P.S. Most datacenters provide 20 amps AC a rack, but what
about DC?
