Peter,

The calculation of power in an AC circuit certainly can be more complicated.

Apparent Power can be calculated by: P=EI

but true power requires: P=EI cos theta = EI * P.F. (power factor)

where theta is the phase angle between E and I

Power Factor F.F. =P/IE = cos theta

or 

cos theta = true power/apparent power

I find that apparent power fits for the calculation you require.

Besides, cosines make me dizzy. :)
