Subject: pho: Union Pacific Says Microsoft Train Simulator Is Dangerous

THURSDAY, MAY 10, 2001, Palo Alto, CA -- Union Pacific Railroad has
declared that it will aggressively go after anyone who distributes
trains with UP's trademarks for use with Microsoft's soon-to-be-released
Train Simulator program, but the reasoning they gave the Train Simulator
community for this pre-emptive strike is quite interesting: UP thinks
Train Simulator is dangerous.
According to messages (1, 2) posted on a popular TrainOrders.com forum
by John Bromley, Union Pacific's public relations director, (and a
message sent to me privately from Bromley) Union Pacific turned down
Microsoft's request to be involved with Train Simulator because UP is
concerned that people will learn to drive a train and then hop into a
real one which might cause a major accident.
