Spam on Mob
People have stopped complaining about spam going to the mob list,
but it's still happening, and it's still annoying me.
This Saturday I'm going to change the MTA (mail server software) on
the server that the list runs on to use Paul Vixie's Realtime Blackhole
List as a filtering mechanism. Paul keeps a large list of Internet
sites that are known for spamming. If one of them tries to send mail
to the mob list, the mail is rejected. This won't block ALL spam
to the list, but it should block most of it.
A further idea would block all spam- but it would require that you only
post to the list from _one_ address. In other words, you'd have to post
to the list from the address that recieves the list. Otherwise, the mail
would be rejected. This isn't an ideal solution, since many people post
to the list from multiple addresses (myself included). I'll wait and
see how much spam gets stopped by the Blackhole filter first.
As for AOL morons, it seems like the morons posting to the Mob list aren't
just coming from AOL anymore. It's simple to add a filter to reject mail
from AOL (I'm proud to say that no mob members use AOL), but the only
way to completely block the morons from posting "Petticoat Junction"
requests would be the second idea I mentioned above.
In short- Hopefully the list will be almost spam free next week... :-)
