Getting GPM to work in XTERM.

Has anyone gotten what used to be called 'selection' and is now called
'gpm' to work in an xterm.  It works OK in a text shell out of 
X-Windows but if I start X and try it, it wount paste.  I used to 
type in 'TERM=vt100' in an xterm to get it to work a few months back
but now that doesn't do any good.
