I was referring to the boot manager that comes with partition magic. Is
this a viable option?

ok. There is something that I'm not quite grasping here: Lets say I've got
my new 400 Meg partition, (active) and I boot from a slackware (or other)
diskette with the intent of installing linux. Since I've got a little space
on my dos partition, I have already placed the desired disk sets there (?).
During installation on the new partition, how are these
other-partition-mounted installation files useful? Are they visible? Or is
there another method of installation that I'm missing?
