[ale] Beep Volume

I've got Caldera 2.3 loaded on my laptop and the initial "beep" volume is
extremely high. After boot-up I can open the sound mixer panel and lower the
volume, but after a reboot it goes back to the defaut (loud) volume. Does anyone
know of a way to set the initial volume lower?
