[ale] newbie: modem configuration

Ok, new problem, but making progress, I am connecting but kicking myself
off rather immediately:

For my tail /dev/log/messages I get

localhost ifup-ppp: ppd started for ppp1
localhost chat [1197]: ATDT4450159^M
localhost chat [1197]: CONNECT
localhost chat [1197]: -- got it
localhost chat [1197]: expect (ogin:)
localhost chat [1197]: ppd 2.3.5 started by root, uid 0
localhost chat [1197]: Device modem is lock by pid 1195 [note: this number
started lower]
localhost chat [1197]: EXIT

What does the next to the last line mean?  Modem locked? how do I "unlock
it" or get my ISP to recognize it?  I have the username and passwords
inserted correctly I believe.

(Previous problem about not being able to read var messages was because I
had not changed to that directory :-(
