[ale] unresolved symbols

I compiled the new serial driver module for my RH 6.1 machine and have
removed the serial drivers from the kernel.
When I boot on the new kernel and depmod runs I get  'unresolved
dependencies' on serial.o and pcmcia serial.o.  can someone tell me what
unresolved dependencies are and how to avoid this issue.  The drivers work
fine.  The error message is annoying.
