Edit /etc/XF86Config and look for 'ViewPort' in one of the
Section "Screen" places.  If you change it to 

     Viewport 0 0 

you'll get the size of the largest modes line that your server can
handle.  If it still seems bigger, take out the Modes you aren't using 
right above it.
