[ale] floppy problem

I have a weird problem with my floppy drive under Red Hat 6.0.
Everything seems to lock up when I am using Mount, or fdformat, or mkfs,
or dd  command on this floppy drive.  The drive light stays green and
you can not do anything with machine ( mouse, keyboard, etc...).  I
first thought that it might be the drive that is going bad but it seems
to do the same thing when I swaped it out with  my old 386 machine's
floppy drive.  I also try re-creating the device files by using MAKEDEV
under /dev directory.  That did not help either.  does anyone have this
same problem.  Your help would be greatly appreciated.
