I am very new to this so forgive me in advance if my lingo and 
understanding are not up to par.

I don't know if my solution is pertinent to your problem or not.  I was 
having the same symptoms. Additionally, I noticed once when I was shutting 
down X there were a lot of "Color errors" that were "hiding" on whatever 
terminal lies "beneath" X (i.e. the terminal you get when you shutdown X). 
 Anyway, I had been running redhat on some _really_ old hardware, including 
an Oak video card w/ little or no video memory.

Solution: bought new video card.  I spent $25 on a 4 meg PCI card that 
appears to have solved the problem.

Now the only problems I have to solve are operator error!
