[ale] ftp a directory

Evening,
I have been searching for a hour for the answer and have decided to use
the vast knowledge of ale, so

1) how do you transfer a directory using command line ftp.

2) what in the world does mdir do? (in layman's terms please)

This would seem a simple concept, but I am still making myself get more
comfortable with command line ftp.  Thanks in advance.
