[ale] cddb in xmms 1.2.4

Okay, I've been trying to get cddb lists displayed in xmms 1.2.4
while playing cd in /dev/scd0, but so far I only get 
1. CD AUDIO TRACK 1	3:50
or whatever.  According to the "network window" when I configure
CD Audio Player 1.2.4 plugin, I keep getting 

Connecting to CDDB-server freedb.freedb.org: Ok
Getting cddb protocol level: Failed

I've tried connecting to freedb.freedb.org/~cddb/ so as to use
port 80 and avoid my firewall, but I really don't think the
firewall is the problem.  I can use CDDB-get (a perl module that
uses udp or tcp:80, either one) with no problems.  So, I'm
thinking it's a plugin problem.  Does anyone else here have any
experience with it?
