Max cat5 by standard is 300ft and you should use 568a cabling on both ends unless it is a crossover and then you use 568b on the other end. (pairs two and three reversed)

I unsuccessfully tried a couple of times using a crimping tool from
Home Depot. I'm using their cat5e cable [eight wires I believe].
