[ale] compiling kernel

i've used "make xconfig" and created the config. file, "kernel_A".

Now I use:

make dep
make clean
make bzImage

Question:

How does the "make" pgm. know to look for /usr/src/linux-2.2.17/kernel_A to 
use when compiling?

If it doesn't, how do I force the make pgm. to use my "kernel_A" 
configurations?
