[ale] Catching key press at boot up

Can someone give me a scrap of C code that I can have excuted in my init scripts.  I need to 
be able to detect an Esc keybress at anytime during bootup.

I want to be able to execute a program if the Esc key has been pressed.  It is meant for 
an embedded device and will allow the user to restore the unit to factory settings.
