I have a 486 DX2-80 with 8 MB which I've played around with as a
network print server. free reports 6976k total memory. If I look
in /var/log/dmesg, it says:
Memory: 6976k/8576k available (732k kernel code, 384k reserved, 484k data)
Apparently, the end of memory is considered to be 8576k, which is
8 MB + 384k (The 384k being the reserved block between 640k and 1MB).
The 6976k that free reports represents 8 MB minus 732k kernel code
minus 484k kernel data.
