I've just been through a very similar process. I tried Red Hat,
Mandrake, Slackware. All the dists I've had experience with. No luck.
I was able to install Debian (potato) on this box successfully. Almost
the same configuration. (~200 meg drive/8 mb ram/laptop).
If I had it to do all over again, I'd start with Debian.
