[ale] Getting X to work on a Dell Dimension 4500S?

I've got one of these little beasties at the office and can't get X to 
play nice at all. Tried 3.3.6 (or whatever) from Mandrake 8.2 and 4.2 
from Mandrake 9.0b1.

Has anyone had any experience with this thing?
