[ale] hard drive integrity

anyone know of any tools that can verify the integrity of a hard drive? 
  I know you can check for bad blocks via mkfs, but I'm curious if 
anyone knows of any other linux based tools.

I didn't have to buy my radio from a specific company to listen
to FM, why doesn't that apply to the Internet (anymore...)?
