[ale] Gentoo - emerge --how-big <package>

I'd like to be able to figure out how much "stuff" an
emerge is going to install, in terms of Mbytes, without
actually doing the emerge.
For example, I've got a machine here that has a smallish
disk. I've got no X stuff installed at the moment, and
I want to use one of the Big 2, Gnome or KDE. Whichever
one is smaller, including all its dependencies. So
far, "du ; emerge --fetchonly <package> ; du ; emerge
unmerge <package>" seems to work, but... ugh. Is there
a better way?
Thanks,
