Oh yes. Definitely check your cabling before blaming the
NIC or the software. You can get into trouble by using
a crossover cable with a hub, too. If you have a hub
with an uplink port or switch, you can test this
hypothesis by switching from the uplink port to a
normal port, or toggling the uplink switch while
one machine's cable is plugged into the uplink
port. If it works with uplink enabled, you have
a crossover cable where you need a straight-through.
