I read the Cringley article a couple of weeks ago and was
very interested. yesterday I saw them @ MicroCenter for
$75/per (=> $150/"hop") and was tempted but figured I'd
check w/the collective to see if anyone's actually tried
it yet (Linux, M$ or even Mac).
for those who haven't heard of HomePlug it's a box which
takes ethernet in a standard RJ45 and sends it over your
electrical system at 14Mbs (kind of like a cable modem
but over power lines). not wireLESS but >5x 802.11 and
elimates need to fish cat5. for complete story look in
Cringley archives at www.pbs.org
also, don't know if ale has a prohibition on posting
vendor prices but (pleading ignorance) MicroCenter has
1100VA APC UPSs (w/cat5 surge surpressor) on sale for
$150 through Sunday! I bought a 2nd for other desktop
(they've ran this sale before) & moved my cable modem,
router & switch to my old POS Triplite 650...
