[ale] Mixing Alarm and Sleep

BUGS
       sleep() may be implemented using SIGALRM; mixing calls  to
       alarm() and sleep() is a bad idea.


Basically, sleep may use SIGALRM to wake up, so your calls to alarm() are
interfering.
