[ale] email addresses with ip addresses

We have a development server that does not know about dns.  (I don't know
why and the guy with root password does not think its important)  Anyway
we want to send email from a script with the mail command.  Is there
anyway to do something along the lines of tj at 129.34.23.54 using
an ip address with the mail command.   the mail command says no.
