[ale] ctrl key in gnome

I'm trying to do a multiple selection in a web drop-down box that is
supposed to allow  it. The select more than one item, hold the control
key while selecting item 2+. It doesn't work! Not galeon, mozilla or
netscape. 

Has gnome captured a control key press? Any idea where I should start
looking?
