[ale] Why so many updates to RedHat?

I've been out of town for two weeks.  Today I started to update my
RedHat 7.3 system and found that there were over 400 updated packages? 
A week ago when I updated my Dad's system there were only 100 packages,
or so, and I think I had already put most of them on my work machine.

Did I miss something big?  Why are there so many new packages for RedHat
all of a sudden?
