[ale] Q: Linux ftp through M$ p[r]oxy

As a Linux denizen of a M$ LAN domain, I must pass through a proxy to
'ftp' servers in the outside world. My Win98 laptop's builtin 'ftp' client
works just fine, but I can't get through with a Linux host.

I am fiddling with ncftp and not being successful. I see

 $ ncftp <real_server_ip>
 <credits>
 Could not connect to <proxyIP>. Connection refused.

I don't know much about the proxy.

Any ideas?
