No, you don't need an entry in /etc/fstab. The system automounter files are completely seperate.
If you want Gnome/nautilus to be able to "auto mount" it for you, then it is needed in /etc/fstab. Be sure to include the "user,noauto" options on the line. This is completely different from the system level automount (autofs/mountd).
