[ale] snmp monitoring and security concerns

I'm looking into bandwidth monitoring tools and general network health tools
like NetSaint.  Of course for bandwidth monitoring, everything Google points
to MRTG, which relies on SNMP.  I know there are security concerns with
SNMP, but also that it's a really valuable tool for admins.  

Anyone have any real-world advice on this particular balance of
security-vs-useful tool?
