One of the more challenging aspects of security management is risk
analysis. Looks like in this case, the odds played out in his favor,
therefore we must conclude that he succeeded in managing the risk
effectively...

...or he was just really lucky.

I'm going with the latter. On this type of machine, ssh on a non-standard
port is the order of the day. That's a manageable risk.
