[ale] weird nfs problem

I have an NFS server. The exports file was like so:

	/dir user1(rw)
	/dir user2(rw)

I changed it to:

	/dir user1(rw)
	/dir/subdir user2(rw)

Now, the users can create and remove files BUT not edit files. I just want to 
limit user2 to a subdirectory. I can still see /dir from the clients.
When I open vi to edit a file under /dir, it says "error writing to swap file" 
and will not let me save the file. Same type of error with other editors.
Anyone heard of this?
