[ale] network problems?

Okay, my pea brain continues to be even more confused.  I've just been 
trying traceroute to a number of sites, all of which, never get there. 
I've tried www.cnn.com, www.att.com, www.google.com

Can someone explain to me why this is?  I've yet to successfully 
traceroute any location.
