Not sure about actual Linux devices, but under other OSes the device has a rewind name and a non-rewind device name. Using the non-rewind device should keep the drive from rewinding.

is there a tar or mt switch to prevent a DLT from rewinding after an operation?
I have a backup script which does a
tar cvf /dev/sto ${some_path}
once a week when the tape is changed and pvf the other six.
the problem is that is takes progressively longer with each append operation as
the week progresses which I assume is because the tape is rewinding.
is there an easy way to prevent this?
