[ale] identifying serial ports (which is ttyS0, etc.)?

I'm trying to my x10 remote setup.

How can you tell which serial port on a machine is set to /dev/ttyS0,
/dev/ttyS1, etc?  Is there a way to tell if something is plugged into the
port?
