As I recently upgraded from an intel processor to an amd, I also 
experienced similar problems, Although my problems were not with 
xscreensaver, it did appear to be graphically related.  Playing games, 
for example.

I did two things, in the following order which resolved all my problems:

mem=nopentium added to boot options
custom compiled kernel

I'd suggest you might try them if you've not done so.
