[ale] DVD Writers & Linux

I'm looking to get a new machine and want to buy a DVD write for it (probably the Pioneer DVD-
RW A05). Finally I'll have a good, portable backup media that can handle my data needs! 
However, I'm curious as to what kind of support there is for these things under Linux. Am I going to 
be able to take advantage of this thing or will I have to boot under Windows to do system 
backups? Anyone have any experiences to share?
