[ale] another darn sed/awk question

Ok, so I'm sitting here beating my head on my desk trying to get awk 
and/or sed to display the first 8 characters of a line, a space, and 
then the rest of the line.

example.txt
ABCDEFG1234567890 xxxxxxxx
BCDEFGH2314234233 xxxxxxxx
CDEFGHIJ3748374834 xxxxxxxx
ad nausem...

I'd like to create:
ABCDEFG [space] 1234567890 [space] xxxxxxxxx

Sounds simple enough right?  I can't seem to figure it out!  I've tried 
combinations of sed/awk and cut but all to no avail.

Can anyone enlighten me here?
