[ale] Debuging "X -query" problem

This once worked, but now it doesn't.

on my laptop, I run "X -query <host>", and I would get the KDM login box from 
<host>.

Now, all I get is the dumb/standard X11 crosshatch, with a the "black X" mouse 
pointer.  I can't find any logs that are being helpful.  I'm not even SURE 
which machine the problem is really on.

Pointers?
