If you don't want to do bind, try dnsmasq which is a 
lightweight caching server for home networks.  I just 
replaced my named with it today.  It gets its local 
database from hosts and dhcpd.leases and forwards any 
other query.

Also I have my browsers configured not to use the proxy 
for local addresses, I have never tried running any other 
way.
