[ale] signed numbers from as/400 file?

Does anyone know of a utility to convert signed bytes from an AS/400 
into ascii text?  I'm ftp'ing a file down from an AS/400 and in on of 
the fields, I have 7 binary bytes.  It's not ebcdic, because the rest of 
the file is plain ASCII.  It's a number field, so I think it's some 
format that the AS/400 stores numbers in.

Does this make any sense to anyone?
