Same here.
I just use cyrus as the local email store.
The email is pulled from offsite with fetchmail.
For me it is really just a replacement for plain old mailbox files
or mh folders that 'just work' with all new email tools.
Currently I am using evolution as my email tool .. but with my email
stored using cyrus I can switch any time I want to.

Install cyrus on your laptop?
It is really easy to install and the resource usage is almost nil.
