As one who lived and worked in newsrooms with those
wire service terminals clanging and clacking continuously,
I can tell you that the single, most important accessory
was the sound-abating box. Small newsrooms with only
two or three of the damn things could get by with the
padded boxes. Larger newsrooms always put those terminals
off in a room by themselves. And kept the door closed!

Who remembers a printer in Newport News who could read the
perforated tape produced by the wire machines as easily as
I could read hot lead type.
