[ale] syncing a palm via serial/usb device?

I've picked up a serial/usb converter to try and sync my palm with. 
I've tried it with two different boxes, no luck.  There are drivers 
loading for the device and the link light is lit.  when I try to sync, I 
see the rx light blink, but no connect.  Tried with both jpilot and 
kpilot.  Anyone had any success with such?
