Dow,
Check out the Vuescan web page: www.hamrick.com
This software is free for Linux users, and supports most
true USB and SCSI scanners. It does not support "mock"
USB scanners that are actually parallel port scanners with
an internal USB/parallel translation.

I just picked up a no-longer-manufactured Epson 3200 and
Vuescan supports it fairly well. (Except I can't yet get
it to do a simple copy/print of a text document.)

According to the web page the following HP scanners are
supported:
USB Flatbed scanners:
   HP 2100C, 2200C, 4100C, 5200C, 5300C, 6200C, 6300C, 7400C

SCSI Flatbed scanners:
   All HP

UNSUPPORTED SCANNERS:
HP 3300, 3400, 3500, 4200, 4300, 4400, 4500, 5400 and 5500
