I've mostly used it at work.  At both my current and rpevious jobs, everyone 
puts their AIM login on a central server (a wiki, actually).  Then we all 
enter them in our buddy list.  Now you can ask questions of your colleagues 
without a phone call.  This is particularly nice for your neighbors in a cube 
farm.

It's also neat for chatting with faraway friends and relatives.

Some clients can also to IRC (kopete can) which I use for techsupport 
occasionally.
