it also sounds like an attempt to extend the "self serve" checkout.  i
remember using the express lanes at Wal-Mart and Kroger where you scan the
items yourself, so this will probably be an extention of those.  you
wouldn't need to scan the items, just place them on the conveyor belt and as
it goes through the scanner it automatically tallys your order.

i would think you could extend the tracking ability by using some type of
antenna configuration in the parking lots.  most have ample streetlights and
are typically unobscured.

if i remember correctly there was a test of product tracking tried with
razors, is this related?
