Dan,

      I have tried Mandrake 9.1, SuSE 8.2 and Red Hat 9.0  on a desktop and
a laptop. I found Mandrake to be incredibly easy to install and use. My kids
had no problems at all with Mandrake, and the Mandrake newsgroup offers a
lot of help. That said, I crashed it fairly often - not sure if it was
because that was my first Linux distribution and I tried to do more than I
knew how to do - or if it was a problem with Mandrake itself. I'm thinking
it was more new user syndrome.

      Red Hat was also simple to install, but didn't excite me all that
much. Don't know if I would like Fedora more or less, haven't tried it.

      I ended up installing and sticking with SuSE 8.2, and will upgrade to
9.0 at some point. SuSE has been easy to install, easy to use, stable, and a
"clean" desktop distribution. SuSE has my vote for easy to install, easy to
maintain and easy to use.
