The Internet-only bank, Egg, which is based in the UK, is making plans for
browserless Internet banking. What will replace the browser? A new "smart
client". All signs point to this being a piece of Microsoft's next generation
OS, Longhorn. Remember that Microsoft has already announced it will be
phasing out the stand-alone browser. When Egg converts to the new system, the
customer's choice will be...Microsoft or nothing. Apparently, they will
maintain a lower-level interface for browser users, but they are placing
their main bets on the Longhorn setup. This is a scary trend, and one that
consumers ought to fight tooth and nail.
